25 years of Grand Designs: Deuren's mark on iconic builds

Throughout the years, Grand Designs has showcased some of the most daring and groundbreaking homes that push the limits of engineering, architecture, and design. Now, as the renowned television series celebrates its 25th anniversary, Deuren is proud to reflect on its bespoke contributions that have provided flawless finishes for several showstopping projects – from sculptural homes inspired by natural forms to cliff-side structures that defy gravity. With an effortless blend of innovation, craftsmanship, and creativity, explore how Deuren has delivered on even the most challenging door design visions.

The Blackdown Hills ammonite abode

One of the most ambitious and visually striking builds ever featured on Grand Designs, the Blackdown Hills project drew inspiration from an ammonite shell found on the property, with its design curving and coiling into the landscape like a snake. Stephen, an engineering mastermind, along with his wife Elizabeth, a keen horticulturist, wanted a home that reflected their passions: a fusion of cutting-edge technology and a deep connection to nature.

But the exterior wasn’t the only striking element of this build. Deuren played an essential role in realising the home’s interior design, providing beautifully bespoke internal doors that complemented the sweeping curves and intricate detailing carried throughout the property. As with any highly custom project, the challenge lay in designing doors that were not only functional but blended seamlessly into the organic, flowing forms of the home. Deuren’s craftsmanship and ability to create inimitable bespoke pieces ensured the doors became integral features rather than an afterthought. High-quality finishes and materials reflected the natural beauty of the surrounding environment, ensuring even the smallest details contributed to the home’s overall vision of harmonious modern living.

The Galloway cliff-top retreat

Building on a sheer cliff, 100 feet above crashing waves, isn’t for the faint-hearted. However, with visions of a two-bedroom, glass-fronted, earth-sheltered home on Scotland’s west coast, it was an extraordinary challenge that Andy, a former structural engineer, and his wife, Jeanette, were willing to take on. Beyond logistical difficulties, the aesthetic demands of such a dramatic location meant every design element had to enhance the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Deuren was enlisted to provide both internal and external doors for the project, ensuring these crucial elements maintained the property’s minimalist yet resilient design ethos. Exposed to extreme weather conditions, the bespoke entrance doors had to be robust and constructed to withstand the rugged outdoor environment, while still offering the sleek, contemporary look the couple desired. The carefully selected finishes and materials complemented the property’s industrial palette of steel and concrete, while our expert craftsmanship ensured the doors offered both durability and sophistication.

The South Manchester curved glass house

The South Manchester project marked one of Deuren’s most recent collaborations with Grand Designs, involving a striking curved glass family home that stretched the boundaries of architectural possibility. Inviting input from architects and designers across Sweden, Italy, and Latvia, film producer Colin and his wife Adele envisaged a bold, futuristic home that echoed their adventurous spirit and global outlook. However, the project wasn’t without its setbacks. Facing significant delays and financial strain due to the pandemic, the couple’s vision was tested at every stage.

Despite the challenges, Deuren’s contribution played a small yet significant role in realising the couple’s dream. From the installation of a custom garage door to wall panelling in the master bedroom, Deuren delivered bespoke elements to match the home’s bold architectural lines. The unique garage door, designed to integrate seamlessly into the home’s sleek and stylish façade, was a perfect example of Deuren’s ability to combine functionality with high-end design. Meanwhile, the luxurious wall panelling in the master bedroom paid homage to the high-quality, artisanal features that took the home’s interior to new heights.

The Deuren difference

With a reputation for unparalleled craftsmanship and innovation, Deuren has become synonymous with beautifully bespoke doors that not only meet the architectural ambitions of these high-profile projects but enhance them. Whether it’s internal, external, or garage doors – or even custom wall veneers – every project begins with a deep understanding of the client’s needs, with Deuren working closely alongside architects, specifiers, and homeowners to ensure every aspect aligns, and often even enhances, the architectural vision.

By pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, Deuren has earned its reputation as the UK’s authority on bespoke doors. These Grand Designs projects are a testament to our ability to help transform pipedream visions into showstopping spaces that are both functional and stunning reflections of personal style. No off-the-shelf products. No rushed finishes. That’s the Deuren difference.
