Winners of the Deuren door competition
Deuren has recently teamed up with University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), to run a design competition for their students in order to get some fresh ideas for an internal door set. The competition, for which the undergraduates had to plan the creation of a truly unique and eye-catching internal door set, was designed to not only bring a new look to internal door sets, but to also help uncover some of the best design talents around. The winner of the competition would have their door produced at our factory in West Yorkshire, allowing them to see their design become a reality. Last month it was finally time to judge the aspiring interior designer’s competition entries, which were all outstanding!
The standard from all of the entries was extremely high, and therefore it was extremely difficult to single out the winners. However, after much deliberation, Deuren’s director Ian Chubb, and Arron Brown of digital marketing agency The Bigger Boat, finally managed to choose their top 3.
1st Place: Leigh Nikita Cain
‘After looking into the competition brief and researching into Deuren, I found their work to be sophisticated & intriguing which was very appealing to me. My aim was to create something of similar taste but with a twist to it. I’m over the moon that they liked, and chose, my design as the winner.’ Ian said of the winning design, “As a business, we are looking at a more traditional design which incorporates modern design features – I feel this one met the criteria perfectly.”
2nd Place: Abigail Bailey
‘The inspiration behind my design was a table I came across while looking through Pinterest. I loved how different it was and I’d never seen anything like it, therefore I wanted to incorporate that design into my own.’ Ian’s comments: “This design showed great improvisation with the use of resin. It’s something we have thought about in the past, and I liked the design as a whole.”
3rd Place: Ben Hunter
‘I wanted to think about the concept of a door, rather than just a specific design. I wanted to do something different with the door – not just aesthetically, but also the technical aspect and manufacturing of it. I like things that move and change as our life adapts and this inspired me with my design.’ Ian’s comments: This one stood out from a new design concept – Ben has thought about the principles of the business, as well as the design, which I thought was clever.”
Originally Ian was going to pick one door to go into production, however having been that impressed with the designs, he has decided to create the second-placed door too. Thank you to all the entrants, it was great to see all of your great ideas. A big congratulations also goes to the winner, Leigh Nikita Cain, whose door will be put into production this year.
